France has a very high level of unemployment: approximately 10% at the time of writing this document.
If you do not speak French fluently, your chances of getting a job are slim.
Even if you do speak French, as a foreigner, you are likely to become a scapegoat for your employer’s ills and woes. LIFO: last-in-first-out - you are also more likely to be the first person sacked when there is a need for belt-tightening.
If you are over 50, your chances of getting a job in France are very slim indeed. There is a disproportionately high level of unemployment in the 50 plus age group.
Another disturbing fact is that there is a disproportionately high level of suicide among French men in their 50’s. This is attributed to a loss of self esteem stemming from a perceived lack of purpose experienced by many men at the end of their working life.
