I get a lot of email from aggrieved, but (mostly) polite, people saying: yes; but, England is much worse than France. All I can say is that while this may be true, it is not the point. This is not a “Britain is Good and France is Bad” argument.

The point is that we think a lot of British people are well aware of the good aspects of France and they are rushing over there in the hope that it will be a cure for all the problems of life in Britain. We think that for lots of people, a move to France will be a leap from the frying pan into the fire. A lot of people are getting into serious financial problems (e.g. unable to get a job, failing businesses, an inability to pay the horrendously high tax / social contributions, not having the right or sufficient medical cover) and legal trouble (e.g. working illegally, not running your small business according to the book, not paying taxes) by moving to France. This is a very serious matter.

We suggest people look before they leap. The objective of this website is to give an alternative perspective. To provide useful information that will help make an informed decision about moving to France to live.

We invite you to contribute to this site and help us prepare others for the more difficult aspects of a move to France. If you think we’ve got it wrong, then please have your say and if possible suggest what we should say in order to be accurate.

I know it can be very satisfying to have a good rant at complete strangers, but please try and be constructive (and if you must be rude, then at least try and be amusing as well).

And just to clarify a few points here and now, we are sensitive souls so please don’t be too unkind:

Contrary to the opinion of some of you, I do have a father and my mother was not spawned by the devil. I have lived in more countries than most people have fingers on their hands, my wife and I have travelled to every continent on earth, and, lastly, we have well over a thousand books in the house (and we’ve read most of them), so we don’t quite fit into the parochial “middle England” box that so many of you try to put us into.

John & Harriet

Postscript: When we started work on this site, my wife and I did half each. I am very sad to say that Harriet was diagnosed with cancer in July 2004 and passed away on April 3, 2005 at the age of 38. Please forgive me if I don’t respond to your emails in a timely fashion, but I have been very distracted at the moment. However, in spite of this terrible thing going on, I do enjoy very much the emails (well most of them) we get about the site.

Don’t Move to France ... until you’ve done your homework.
